pAIper, companion web, avatar, and other experiments fail to account for the cognitive and cultural contexts of the human audience. In the most obvious sense few readers can read the text that these experiments present. Humans have different abilities to read and understand text based on linguistic background, age, and cognitive development. Issues arise in terms of size of text and the speed in which it is presented and how much it relates to the expectation of the user.

Age factor affects reading acuity and reading speed in attaining text information

To investigate the effect of age on reading acuity and reading speed in attaining text information in healthy eyes.Reading acuity, critical print size, reading speed and maximum reading speed were measured in groups of 40 children (8 to 12 years old), …

The experiments offer no strong directionality to the biases of visual tracking of human audience. Eye tracking differs quite a bit by subject matter, text vs. images and more. These experiments provide an almost total violation of any adherence to these well known biases.

These 20 Eye-Tracking Heat Maps Tell Us What People Really See

Alivemachine fails to adhere to the well established rule of 7, that humans short term memory cannot really handle more than 7 chunks of info in short term memory.

The Magical Number 7 and UX (Video)

Many of the alivemachine experiments have zero commitment to spatial integrity. Thus make it hard for the typical human to develop interaction patterns and find a stable basis for sustained use.

Spatial Memory: Why It Matters for UX Design

Overall and in the majority of AliveMachine experiences there is choice overload. With so much open ended ness the user is actually paralyzed into doing nothing.

Choice Overload Impedes User Decision-Making (Video)

Alivemachine does get credit for attending to a somewhat natural tendency of animals to forage for information/signal.

But overall this is defeated by the overall overload of most of the alivemachine experiences, per the dimensions above.

Flow (psychology)

In positive psychology, a flow state, also known colloquially as being in the zone, is the mental state in which a person performing some activity is fully immersed in a feeling of energized focus, full involvement, and enjoyment in the process of the activity. In essence, flow is characterized by the complete absorption in what one does, and a resulting transformation in one’s sense of time.
Named by Mihály Csíkszentmihályi in 1975, the concept has been widely referred to flow state across a variety of fields (and is particularly well recognized in occupational therapy), though the concept has been claimed to have existed for thousands of years under other names. The flow state shares many ch…

While the concept of a more organic and analog computing experience sounds enticing it is from where computing came and then went digital. It is unclear why anyone would want the digital to return to analog.

Alivemachine has not established that one way or another.

The history of analog computing: introduction to the special section

This special issue is one in a series of occasional issues of IEEE Control Systems Magazine dedicated to history. The present issue continues the previous contributions by focusing on the development and impact of a pivotal technology. Analog computers played a key role in enabling the simulation of control systems for several decades, leading to a better understanding of theory and better designs in practice. Here we take a closer look at analog-computer technology in its historical context. a collection of eight articles — an analog-simulation tutorial, four personal histories, and three reports of current activities — written by well-known authors in the fields of analog computing and his…

Then again, most things people test with computers are completely wrong and stupid and by design “against biology”. So test away… but in the end, the digital is always going to be a broken concept to humans.

So rather than test the digital capabilities, it is suggested to abandon all explanation and all discreet knowability and to just Communicate/Signal.
